Seller's MarketWhy Choose Huntertown?
What's driving Huntertown's remarkable growth? A potent combination of available land for development, excellent schools, low taxes, and the appeal of new construction homes in a family-oriented community. As local real estate agent Brad Noll explains: "Huntertown has some of the most new construction in the area. There was the most amount of land available, so a lot of developers came in and started building."
Yet despite its rapid expansion, Huntertown maintains its small-town character. The community's motto—"A Great Place to Call Home!"—reflects both its heritage as a 19th-century settlement and its promise as a modern destination for families seeking quality schools, safe neighborhoods, and room to grow. Residents describe a welcoming atmosphere where neighbors know each other, schools are prioritized, and families flourish.

From 'The Opening' to Indiana's Growth Leader
Huntertown's story begins in a natural forest clearing that early settlers called "The Opening." In 1837, William T. Hunter founded the settlement that would bear his name, establishing it along the Lima Plank Road—a vital thoroughfare connecting Lima (now Howe) with Fort Wayne.
Pioneer Origins (1837-1869)
The location proved strategic. A historical marker at Huntertown Town Hall commemorates these origins: "First called 'The Opening', a natural clearing in the forest, settled about 1837. On the old Lima Plank Road connecting Howe (Lima) and Fort Wayne." The Perry Centre Seminary, founded in 1856, served the community until 1861 when the entire faculty and all adult students enlisted in the Union Army.
Railroad Era Growth
The town was formally platted in 1869 when the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad brought new vitality to the settlement. As many as 45 town lots sold in a single day after the plat opened, and Huntertown quickly emerged as a regional shopping center. The former Huntertown State Bank building was the site of a 1930s robbery by the John Dillinger gang.
Modern Independence (2018)
A pivotal moment came when the town ended its contract with Fort Wayne for wastewater treatment and opened its own wastewater treatment plant in early 2018. This decision provided the infrastructure independence necessary to support the massive growth that followed. The water and wastewater plants now operate at less than 50% capacity, enabling continued expansion.
